Almost every English guide I read said the same thing about Hwadam Botanic Garden: tickets need a Korean phone number, so book through a resale platform or give up. I went to the official site to check, switched the language toggle to English, and found a booking route those guides never mention. It takes a passport and a card, nothing Korean.
Here is what that route is, what it covers, and the part of the visit it quietly leaves out.
What Hwadam Botanic Garden Actually Is
Hwadamsup, marketed in English as Hwadam Botanic Garden, is an arboretum in Gwangju city, Gyeonggi Province, about an hour from central Seoul. It is run by the LG Foundation rather than a local government, which is why it operates more like a ticketed attraction than a public park.
The layout matters for planning. A 1,213-metre monorail loop runs from the moss garden entrance up to the summit and back down past the bonsai garden, taking roughly 20 minutes end to end.
The single most important operating rule: the garden runs on 100% advance reservation. There is no walk-up admission ticket at the gate, in any season, for anyone. If you arrive without a booking, you do not get in.

The English Booking Route Most Guides Miss
The Korean booking button on the official site sends you to Yanolja's NOL platform, which does expect a Korean account. That is the route every English blog describes, and it is a real barrier.
The English button sends you somewhere else entirely. It lands on world.nol.com, NOL's international storefront, on a product listed as "Hwadamsup(Hwadam Botanic Garden) Admission Ticket: Best Autumn Foliage Near Seoul." Prices start around USD 5.10, confirmation is instant, and cancellation is allowed.
That storefront runs in English, takes foreign cards, and does not ask for a Korean resident registration number. It is the official channel, not a reseller marking up the ticket.
I only found it because I toggled the site language before clicking rather than after. Most guides appear to have tested the Korean button and stopped there.
What the English Ticket Does Not Include
Here is the gap worth knowing before you go. The English product is an admission ticket, and admission does not cover the monorail. The monorail is priced and sold separately.
| Ticket | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| Garden admission | ₩11,000 | ₩7,000 |
| Monorail, section 1 | ₩5,000 | ₩4,000 |
| Monorail, full loop | ₩9,000 | ₩7,000 |
Only monorail departures from Platform 1 are sold online at all. Platforms 2 and 3 sell exclusively at their own unmanned kiosks partway up the mountain, and the front gate ticket office cannot sell you those.
That sounds like bad news and is actually the opposite. It means a sold-out online monorail does not end the matter: you walk up, reach Platform 2 or 3, and buy there. Leftover and cancelled Platform 1 seats also go back on sale at the front gate and Platform 1 kiosks.
If you skip the monorail entirely, you lose nothing essential. The official guidance states that visitors with strollers and wheelchairs can tour the entire garden without boarding it.

Peak Season Dates and the Sold-Out Problem
Autumn peak season this year runs 23 October to 15 November. Tickets for the whole window went on sale at 1 PM on 16 September and moved fast, so most peak dates are already gone.
Peak season also changes the schedule in three ways worth noting. Opening moves an hour earlier, to 08:00, with last entry at 17:00 through 1 November and 16:00 from 2 to 15 November.
The usual Monday closure is suspended, so the garden opens every day. Every discount category, including the LG U+ membership rate, is switched off for the period.
Cancellations are your way in. A full refund is only available up to one day before the visit, dropping to a 70% refund on the day itself, which pushes most cancellations into the evening before. Watching your target date the night before beats refreshing at random.
For how the foliage timing compares with the rest of the country, our guide to when each mountain peaks covers the national calendar.
Getting There Without a Car
There is no train station at the garden. The practical route is Gyeonggang Line to Gonjiam Station, then a taxi, which takes 10 to 15 minutes and is easy to hail on peak weekends because so many visitors do the same thing.
If you drive or take a taxi the whole way, you do not park at the gate. Cars go to a parking tower and a shuttle bus runs the last stretch, every 10 to 15 minutes during peak season, inbound from 08:00 to 16:40 and back until 18:00.
The address to give a driver is 278 Docheogwit-ro, Docheok-myeon, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do. The main line is 031-8026-6666.

What to Do Right Now
1. Open the official site and switch it to English before clicking anything. The Korean and English booking buttons go to different platforms, and only one of them works without a Korean account.
2. Book admission first and treat the monorail as a same-day decision. Platform 2 and 3 kiosks are not online, so an online sell-out is not the final word.
3. If peak dates are gone, look at 16 to 22 November. The garden stays open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00, with far less competition and late foliage still on the trees.

Wrapping Up
The "you need a Korean phone number" advice about Hwadam Botanic Garden was true of one booking button and false of the other, and nobody seems to have checked the second one. Book admission through the English storefront, leave the monorail as a flexible on-site call, and the only hard constraint left is the calendar. Operating hours shift with the season, so confirm them on the official notice board before you travel.
